Waning Crescent Moon
Roy’s Redwoods

This was such a beautiful, joyous and harmonious day.  Michelle met us at Roy’s and on our way there the children were speaking a lot about Halloween and what they were going to be, the type of beds they sleep in and some where building second stories to their homes or, what kind of house do you have? to each other.   Lively, connected and engaging conversations and, with some help, taking very good turns listening to one another speak.  And oh yes, before we got rolling I brought them back to our circle that we had on Thursday  about the agreements that they made on how to help themselves and each other if they get a bit upset.  This seemed to lay a good and safe tone for the day.
When we got to Roy’s they very, very happily ran out of the bus and began playing in the primitive houses that are built or naturally built there.  Many of them began to find yellow balls and later Michelle, Layton, Alara and Ione went on a search for these magical things. Actually the entire day was filled with finding special, beautiful and magickal things and hearing stories of such wonders.
After a great deal of play and joy we came together for circle.  Here we heard a story about an Old Farmer, how he loved the earth and how he gathered the harvest every year always sharing with the animals.  One year winter came very early and hard, He had to gather everything up right at the Harvest Moon. He fell asleep though and his faithful dog gathered all the animals together to help out. They did but then THEY fell asleep. Who should be watching all this time but the Autumn fairies who finished it all.  Since that day good and kind farmers have been leaving soft beds and kind gifts for the fairies at  Harvest Moon time. That was the  jist of the story.
After circle some went on the yellow bead search while the rest of us stayed and played in the houses.  Talay had a home where she was an Autumn fairy and was giving a party to celebrate the Moon.  Aaron was Santa Clause and singing christmas songs and laughing a lot!  Ariel was a fairy and had a fairy dog AKA Rhett!  He wanted to be this and asked if he could be her dog.    She agreed.
After a time I sat down with them and told many Winnie the Pooh stories but Aaron made sure that I got them correct! 🙂   We all had fun hearing these fun tales and adventures!!!
Soon our other friends returned and then it was very close to lunch time and time for us to go to the “bouncy tree” area. But what should we find on our way?????  Each child found a fairy just for them. A tiny little fairy to play with and take care of.  The children were wondering if there were more and more and, well they just had to keep their eyes and ears wide open looking, looking looking. They never found anymore fairies but, they did find other treasures from the deep looking that was taking place.  (YEAH!!!)   Ariel found the bead gun.  After years and years of me finding these little balls all over forests, even way up high in the Marbel Mts. 8 miles in, she found the toy that holds them.  Mysteries eventually get solved it seems.
The rest of the day was filled with playing with the fairies, eating together, playing in and around the big Redwood tree and then, practicing putting up a VERY LARGE TARP for the coming rains!!  What fun they all had playing under this, figuring out what we can tie it up to, going under it and having a Michelle Giant look for them…AHHHHH and this was one of Rhetts favorite part of the day.  We then had to take it down and fold it up but alas, the children LOVED jumping in it so we had to make a delicious buritto out of them, over and over and over again!  And finally they scampered off, Michelle and I quickly folded it up then made our way back to the bus.
They were very much a group today and in circle I worked with a particular name song we sing for them to get to remember each others name more.  Because, it is clear that they still don’t know each others name completely.  We will continue this until it is old hat!

Deer Park

Our initial intention was to go to Lake Lagunitas, or right before it where the lake spreads out far and there is a small beach of sorts.  However, Michelle got to Deer Park early and noticed that the acorns had just fallen from some of the Oak trees.  Well, when they fall you just have to stop what you are doing and gather so, we had circle at the place that the Back to School Picnic was, played there for a bit and then made our way to a place that Rhett knows, loves, and wanted to go to and was right near another Oak Tree, Coast live Oak to be exact.

Earlier we gathered a lot of acorns, oak galls and acorn caps. Then at this new place we gathered some of these kinds of acorns that had stripes where as the others were dark brown. Know what kind the dark brown ones were?

The children then had such a GRAND time playing and eating up at the tree house.  They found a lot of small pieces of glass that we picked up and put in the Earth bag,or rather my pocket until we got to the bottom where the earth bag was.  Rhett helped Ione climb up, down and around in order to swing on the swing there.  While they were doing that the rest of the children played with the ocarina/flute I have just for them and I created many ,many stories for them while they, in turn played music to the stories. Aaron really wanted really scary stories, particularly about Monsters but alas, mine were not as scary as they wanted. I even told a rendidtion of the three little pigs that left us all with smiles and ready to adventure on.
I have been wanting to take the children on a bit of a challenging adventure to a beautiful spot not far from the parking lot yet has a feeling of being far away and in a wonder land.  The walk on skinny paths and over many parts of the dry creek bed was a challenge for some and an absolute joy and or ease for others.  When we got there it was indeed a magic wonder land as there were already outdoor primitive structures in place and more Redwood Circles that seemed to be made for resting in and taking in the beauty of life.  Rhett, Ariel, Velia , Talay and I became cats and climbed up and down the large logs, the others played in the house and then made maps and drew stories of the day while also eating and sharing food.  A kerskufful took place so we called a “gathering of the village” where we heard suggestions and thoughts as to what to do, how to help and making agreements.  This all happened with, what seems now to be becoming the way we end our circles like these; holding pinkies( the pinky finger in Chinese medicine is said to connect to the heart) connecting ourselves together with a unified agreement.  And so we did this and then we needed to pack up and make our way back to the bus.   This time however we took a different trail that was far wider and a bit easier. The children all played games coming down.  We discovered how hot the day really was as we were protected by the trees throughout our day.
Due to not going on the bus the day was full and flowing from beginning to end.
There is much growth, emotionally and physically with them all as we have passed day 4.  We are no longer in the beginning but we are IN the Tender Tracks world and learning about each other, the Earth and  Sky.
The story today was called Earth Namer a Maidu tale by Margery Ernstein and Janet Korbin’s which was based on a condensed version of the original native tale.
This story introduced finding the names of things by observing them and drawing what you see and creating names for them.  The children took to this immediately and wanted to draw in our Tender Tracks Journal straight away as they took it on their explorations.
Writing what we have seen during the day started on day two and has now expanded.

Waxing half Moon
Roy’s Redwoods

Another beautiful day where unity and closeness continues to grow. On this day we celebrated Talay’s birthday but first, when we all piled out of the bus great joy and explorations occurred. I gave a new bone flute to Michelle and she began a game” I hide and play the flute, you find me by listening to where the sound is” and off they all went. From there we found some wonderful Redwood hideaways for fun and great explorations up a hill.  Two people on horses rode by and that gave way to great clues and tracking fun later in the day. But at this point, Velia and Ariel stayed with me below as I shared with them a wooden occarina that I had just for them to play. Velia picked it up REALLY quickly and Ariel worked a bit more at it.    They wanted to run off and play the same game yet I wanted to make it so it can be hung around their necks first before sending their exuberance off into the woods and, oh dear by chance, it loose it’s way on the ground unexpectedly. 🙂
It seemed like a good time to commence with our birthday circle so, songs first, then the great Birthday Candle and story, then gift for the Birthday girl and special songs for her and then, the snack that she brought!!!!  Today was also the first day that they got to use the bowls that they made.  What fun!!!
They are being just great with circle and cleaning up.  What a joy!
We cleaned up and played for a bit, got some warm jackets to put on because under the Redwoods was much colder then out side of them, or so we surmised by looking at our weather stick, the sky between the trees and away from the trees!
We then went looking for the “bouncy tree.”  Aaron said he knew the way so he started us off but then he just couldn’t remember any more so Ariel and Velia took over and then we all just finally found the bouncy tree. There also was the great Redwood Cathedral which they all wanted to eat in and that is what we did.
They played all around and about this great tree as some of us sat on the inside.  There was great climbing of a Bay tree near by. Ione went mid way and then said she was stuck. Velia too. There was a lot of bouncing and sharing of the bouncy tree and then Aaron, Michelle, Rhett, Ariel, Talay, Layton and Alara went to find the Sunny Rock that Aaron shared with everyone.
Ione and Velia were convinced that they were stuck up in the tree and could not come down but with Michelles tall self help, so we waited.
They were really having quite a fun time of it sitting sweetly up on the tree listening and looking for what might be that high or higher.
Rhett came running back and said “Michelle said for you to play your occarina” so I did.  And there was the beginning of us calling back and forth to each other using our flutes.
They all came back soon after and then Aaron and Ione and I went to the sunny rock, then Rhett joined us and then the four of us went exploring to another place where we stayed until almost the end of the day.  It was a very large fallen down Redwood tree that had gotten quite burnt out in last years fires there.  It made GREAT places to sleep in too.  Aaron and Rhett continued to build on an existing house there and then Aaron really wanted to find the “bathroom.”  They actually looked all over there for the perfect bathroom and might actually have found it.:)
The others came over after all working together to find a place to dig a poop hole for Layton. She then decided that she really didn’t have to go so that group started to gather Bay nuts. Layton and Alara scurred off and it was thought that they went to us but they rather ran far away to play “comoflage.”  Unfortunately this was a bit of a scare for us as they went too far and we did not know where they were. So a beautiful circle was created when we found them and we shared ways to play games that you want AND stay safely within the loving arms of the group and the eyes and ears of Michelle and I.  We all held pinkies in the circle and agreed to this.  And of course, we know now that this is something to continue to reinforce, though they all seemed to get it, as well as Layton and Alara who offered wonderful suggestions such as, ‘Have one of the teachers GO with you when you want to play and the other teacher can help find.’ Great idea yes?!!!!
It was then time to sing good bye, say thank you’s, read from our book of the wonders we discovered in the natural world from our day and then off to the bus.
Another beautiful day with great teachings
